The Mind Muscle Connection, Supplements with the Placebo Effect The Placebo Effect dates back for many years. It really became popular in World War II. Supplies ran short due to constrained supply lines and the relentless demand for everything. They would often run out of medicine, especially painkillers, but still had to give wounded soldiers peace of mind, hence the placebo effect.

Soldiers would be shot in the butt with what they thought was morphine. What they weren’t told was that their morphine was just a good dose of saltwater. The amazing this is that when injected with this saltwater, the soldier’s pain would fade, at least for a short time.

Why Does It Work? The medics weren’t being deceiving, they were doing what they had to do, and it worked. They were taking advantage of the Placebo Effect. The Placebo Effect works because it activates the brain, changing it’s psychological or physiological functioning. The soldiers thought they were receiving a pain killer, which they knew killed pain on contact, but they were actually shot with saltwater. The effect was the same, it killed the pain, at least on a short term basis. The basic reason this works is because your brain controls your body, and your mind and thoughts can control your brain.

Muscle Building Placebo Effects The placebo effect spills over into the muscle gaining environment through other drugs known as supplements. The truth is, many of the supplements on the shelves don’t actually contain any active ingredients that would cause someone to gain muscle. Some supplements are like a shot of saltwater, they are useless and just get carried out. Other supplements have very little active ingredient, but not enough to account for any muscle growth that someone might experience while on the supplement.

Most guys don’t actually walk into a supplement store and just purchase anything that catches their eye. They usually make “educated” choices based on what their friends experiences or what they saw in a magazine. When someone gets on a supplement for the first time, they really hope and expect it to work. They only buy the stuff for one reason, they think it will work.

The belief is key here. When you believe something completely, and back it with emotion, you can accomplish things that once seemed impossible. This includes physiological changes, or changes to the body. By thinking and believing that the supplement that was just consumed will cause muscle growth, the brain takes it as instructions. Basically, because of the individual’s strong conviction, the person’s brain will actually get to work and start the muscle building process. It will do this because it was told to do it.

The belief that the supplement will build muscle, with all else staying the same, is enough to spark muscle growth, but the thing is, how many people get on a supplement and do the same things? Stay with me here, the answer is, not very many. Most folks drink “Miracle 2000″ and kick their training up a clicks. Most people will improve their training and their nutrition and recovery.

Give Yourself Some Credit As stated above, most people get on a supplement and completely improve their training and all other aspects of muscle growth. So, even without the supplement, with these changes, you would build muscle anyway. So, too many people just give all of the credit to the supplement. That should stop now; people need to start taking more credit for their gains. People lift the weight, supplements don’t. There is a high probability that the supplement really didn’t do anything, what worked was your new emphasis on training, and the placebo effect. Keep in mind, some supplements are actually a good thing, but none of them will help unless you have a solid foundation in the fundamentals of building muscle. So, if supplements don’t help you build muscle with poor fundamentals, will they help you if you have good fundamentals? They might a little, but you are doing the work and making the gains, not the supplement.

Here are three easy steps to wean yourself off of unnecessary supplements:

1. Slowly stop using whatever you want to quit and see your results not slip, but actually believe that they will improve. Use the placebo effect for your advantage.

2. Remember that you are the one doing the work, the supplement isn’t. You need to take the credit

3. Believe in yourself and your ability to build muscle. Your faith in supplements can build muscle, believe in yourself and watch the results improve.

Now it’s time to use the Placebo effect for your benefit and to help your mind build muscle using the mind and muscle connection.
