A glance in any book shop today is bound to reveal a ton of autobiographies. Successful people explaining how they made it in life. From footballers to business magnates, their stories have a common theme. They overcame the problems that came their way by maintaining an optimistic outlook. To be achievers we must nurture helpful, optimistic thoughts, and drown out negative excuses of why we can’t do something. This is the way life works.

For people who are on a slimming diet, this attitude to weight loss is the key. To successfully complete a weight reduction program, an optimistic mindset is the biggest tool in a dieter’s workbox. An optimistic approach brings about all sorts of opportunities to achieve. It throws up possibilities we might not previously have thought of. On the other hand, a negative outlook blocks us and numbs our ‘can-do’ receptors.

This is because of our Reticular Activation System – a mechanism that automatically tells our brain what to focus on. Over our lives, we’ve experienced a huge number of things that no longer remain in our conscious thoughts – the bulk of what we’ve learned moves from our conscious mind to our sub-conscious mind, a kind of store cupboard stocked up with all our past knowledge and beliefs.

When we consciously attempt to do anything, our Reticular Activation System (RAS) will search the sub-conscious mind for any relevant information it holds, and bring it to our attention. If we’re walking down a street, we’re only made aware of things that have meaning to us – the rest is just background noise.

So if the sub conscious has been fed a diet of optimistic and hopeful things, it will bounce the positives back. However, we can only expect unhelpful, depressing thoughts to be returned if that’s what was originally sown.

Achievers, it would appear, are able to manipulate the messages streaming through to their sub-conscious minds. They do this by choosing exactly what the conscious mind sends, thereby programming their RAS. And so the reticular activation system emerges as a brilliant mechanism for fulfilling our dreams. The sub conscious has no way of knowing whether information sent to it is imaginary or not.

In other words, as it believes what it’s told, we need to create a very specific picture of our goal in our conscious mind. Unquestioningly, our Reticular Activation System will move that positive vision into our ‘mental storage section’, which is then poised to help us with goal achievement. This is done by bringing to our notice all the meaningful information which might otherwise have just been ‘background noise’.

Napoleon Hill said that we can achieve any (realistic) goal if we keep on thinking of that goal, and don’t think any negative thoughts about it. Conversely, our subconscious will help us not to achieve a goal if we keep having pessimistic thoughts about it.
